Mid Xmas Update

BOYS

First want to start with a quick updated from the 2 meets from the previous week.  Despite having 2 dual meets in a row we were able to still swim around and get everyone that was eligible to swim into multiple events over the course of the meets.  Every single kid who swam turned in a team best time in at least 1 event.  Varsity event winners were...
Ben Shaver
Bryce Dibadj
Tim Coutre
Neil Livingston
Michael Hsu

We did lose to both St. Charles East, Huntley, and Hinsdale South.  However, we did pick up our first victory of the year against other Glenbard.

The boys have been doing a really good job so far this break.  Please be aware as we move forward the previously mentioned attendance adaptation due to the flu eating the team. Athletes who have missed no workouts outside of illness will continue to be eligible regardless of attendance.  Any athlete who has missed any workouts other than illness(even if the majority are illness) is ineligible if below 90%.

Recap, and 2 Meets this week

BOYS

Wanted to start with a quick recap of the OPRF meet.  We did end up losing 128-42.  However, I was very pleased with how the boys performed as a whole, especially given all the illness issues.  Every single person who swam turned in a team best time, which as mentioned is a great start to the season.  We had 1 event winner, Ben Shaver, in the breaststroke.  Hopefully this week we get to add a few more names to the list of event winners.

Tuesday night's meet will be at St. Charles East High vs STCE and Huntley.  Meet will start at 4:30pm which is earlier than most meets start, so please arrive early.  Once again the boys need to leave immediately after school.  There will be diving, so the meet will run just a little longer than the OPRF meet.

Thursday night's meet will be at Hinsdale South vs HS and other Glenbard.  I do not have the start time, but I am expecting a 4:30pm start there as well, but do not know for certain at this time.

Morning practice are West on Monday, South on Wednesday and Friday.  I am aware that most of the boys have tests, but they are still expected to attend all morning workouts.

I will start to be sitting kids out of meets for poor attendance.  Any swimmer who is less than 90% attendance at the start of the meet will be sat out for the duration of the meet.  However, if an athlete is sitting out of the meet they will get bonus attendance for the meet portion.  This amount is minuscule and allows for kids who missed for reasons beyond their control to get caught up.

Finally, athletes who have missed practice for no reason other than illness will be eligible, regardless of attendance points, until they miss any other practice.  So if a swimmer has 100% attendance except the flu, they are eligible until they miss a practice.

GIRLS

As mentioned on the facebook page I am working out a deal with Crossfit Glen Ellyn for a place to do dryland when not in season.  I have not finalized the details with them as of this time, but do have the following worked out.

They would be part of the general population, they would not have their own special classes.
They would pay a discounted rate, this rate isn't finalized yet, but there is a discussion of greater reduction for a large number of swimmers.
The workouts would be lightly modified for them, limiting some of the more extreme lifts that serve no purpose for swimmers.
If enough joined they could request their own class time, likely immediately after school.

I can not reiterate how important it is for the girls to stay active outside of the pool.  I know most of the team is swimming year round at this point, but dryland is also very important.  Despite the fact that most of the girls are beyond competent in the weightroom, none of them should be going and working out on their own.  Despite the costs they all need to be getting some sort of instruction and direction, and I feel the Crossfit option is the best one that I know of.

Please email me if you have any further questions.

First Swim Meet on Friday

BOYS

Would like to start off this week with a quick congratulations to the Green team who ended up winning the Intersquad week by a resounding 57-95 tally.

Drylands this week are at West on Monday and Friday, South on Wednesday.

Athletes need to leave for Oak Park River Forest High School immediately after school.  It is already the longest drive, time wise, we have to make on a school day so please leave immediately.  Upon arrival we will begin warming-up/workout.  Meet should start right at 5pm.

Everyone will be swimming on Friday, regardless of attendance.  Both meets next week are tri-meets, so we will be restricted in the individual events.  I just want to make sure everyone gets some swims in before Winter Break.

Winter Break calendar will be finished as soon as I hear from West what time we can use the weight room in the morning.

Finally, there were some issues in the locker room on Saturday.  If there are any further issues people will be removed from the program.

Intersquad Update

We have now completed the first 3 "competitions" of the intersquad week.  The Monday relays ended in a 5-5 tie as both teams got DQ'd on 2 of the 4 relays.  The Tuesday evening Trivia ended in a 7-8 match, unfortunately the entire trivia was worth 30 points.  Wednesday we did the dryland challenge with a score of 4-6.  Therefore the current score is....

Blue - 16
Green - 19

2 quick book keeping things.  First, All Tuesday and Thursday afternoon practices will include dryland and stretching until 6pm.  This Saturday's practice will be from 7:30-9:30am.

I will update the calendar with winter break as soon as I hear back from the schools.

The calendar for this week is as follows

Start of the Boy's Season

GIRLS

Wanted to throw in a few quick anecdotes for the girls.  First, Meg and Kasia both dropped more time from Sectionals in the 100s.  They also both broke the team records to make a total of 3 new team records for the season.

We ended up averaging a best times of 4.09% at Sectionals.  I believe this sets a new record for the best meet ever.

Reminder that the banquet is on Friday @ 6PM at West in the cafeteria.  Contact Gina with any questions.

Finally, everyone should be getting into the pool on Monday for the start of club season, if you haven't already.  I can not stress enough how important this is to the progress of the program.  We had 2 swims this season at Sectionals to non-club swimmers.  This number will only shrink until eventually we don't even have spots in Varsity for summer league only swimmers.  If you need recommendations please let me know.

BOYS

First off, the roster....

Ben Shaver
Michael Hsu
Bryce Dibadj
Noah Brunner
Quin Crisman
Neal Livingston
Mihal Junik
Nick Yangas
Marc Isaac
Cole Bridgman
Tim Coutre
Blake Maroney
Barry Livingston
Christian Landreth
Ryan Holm
Sean Hernandez
Michael Yangas
Drew Breun
Aaron Ruggiero
Ethan Baker
Matt Wenta
Jake Herlihy
CJ Szabo

Yes, this is 23 people.  Tim Jenkins has agreed to be an assistant coach, and that has allowed a small number more than initially expected.  Make sure to thank him next time, and every time, you see him.   We will begin our normal practice schedule tomorrow, this includes morning practices.  Ca;endar is being updated as you  read this, and will likely be correct through mid December by the time you are done reading.

Mornings at West will be Monday and Friday.  We start in the fieldhouse at West.  The fieldhouse is in the lower(west) building through the main doors, down the stair and past the cage.

Mornings at South will be on Wednesday.  We enter through the tunnel at South, which is door 19(??).  Please note mornings at South, the door is locked at 6am.  If you are late, then you can't get in.

I do not know the practice time on Saturday.  I need to check with Lifestart to finalize it.

Sectionals

GIRLS

Obviously a pretty good Sectional meet has once again, come and gone.  We were the team that had the largest swing in the pool as we picked up 39 points without a single diver.  I will post more Sectional stuff later, but I am still playing catch-up.

We should have 5(hopefully 7) State Tickets, they will go in the following order.
Swimmers Parents
Team Administrator
Seniors
Extended Family
Juniors
Non Competing Parents
Sophmores
Freshman

Email me ASAP to request tickets. They are $20 per.

Sectionals Week

GIRLS

Nothing really new to add to the week.  Standard practices all week, except no mornings.  We will have a very quick dryland on Tuesday after practice.  I have contacted Proviso West about possibly using their pool on Thursday/Friday, but don't know what to expect.

The bus will leave from West at 11am.  Meet starts at 1pm, and normally goes till 5pm.  I will be trying to get as many people on deck as I legally can, with priority going to the Seniority.  I know that we have an option to do concessions this weekend, but I would like to have every single girl at the meet if possible.  Even if they aren't swimming just being there will help prepare them for the future if they make the meet.

BOYS

I have the rough outline up of tryout date and times.  Wednesday and Friday are still being discussed with Lifestart Wellness.  The tryout will be on Sunday @ 12pm at Bensenville Aquatic Center, 595 Johns Street. That is the closest 25 yard pool that is available on Sunday.

Sectional Roster and Conference Recap

GIRLS

I have 2 things I would like to point out that I am doing differently this year.  Due to the fact that our relays are set much more firmly in stone this year, I am going to be using the alternate spots to get as many people on deck as possible.  So basically, if a swimmer is already entered in an event but would be an alternate for a relay, I am going to give that alternate slot to the next most qualified person.  I feel safe doing that this year because each relay already has an alternate that is eligible in case of injury.  If there are ANY questions on this please contact me immediately.

Individual Swims
Meghan Beese
Courtney Boak
Kasia Gniatczyk
Paige Lay
Brenda Liu
Annie Meyers
Hera Miao
Vicki Reese
Marina Schroeder

Relay Alternates
Hailey Walch
Katie Sheline
Katie Armstrong
Brandi Buczynski

I will go into as much detail as possible on how this will all work with the girls on TUESDAY.  I say Tuesday because 3 of the girls are going to the York Invite.  All people listed above whom are not going to York have practice Tomorrow morning at West and then practice after school at the tower.

York swimmers start warm-up at 3:30pm(or whenever you get there from school).  And follow the procedures from Saturday.

Conference Recap
The 12 tapered swimmers averaged 3.50% improvement on their swims this season.  Which is even or ahead of last year, despite the facility issues. Acknowledgements of All-Conference swims

Kasia Gniatczyk - 100 Breaststroke

The F/S girls of course did win the meet, which despite not swimming a single F/S meet all year we ended up in a 3 way tie for second place in the division.  We won all three relays and had a number of All-Conference swims, listed below

Paige Lay - Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay, 100 back
Marina Schroeder - Medley Relay, 100 fly, 100 breast, 400 free relay
Annie Meyers - Medley Relay, 100 fly
Katie Armstrong - Medley Relay, 50 free, 100 free, 200 free relay
Brandi Buczynski - 200 free, 400 free relay
Vicki Reese - 200 free, 100 free, 200 free relay, 400 free relay
Hera Miao - 200 IM, 200 free relay, 400 free relay

We also had "All-Conference" swims in the JV level
Maddie Skirvin - 500 free, 400 free relay
Hannah Jenkins - 400 free relay
Maddie Bradley - 400 free relay
Katie Kryger - 400 free relay

Conference Week

GIRLS

3 weeks till Sectionals.

I would like to start out by saying thank you to everyone who has done such a good job of helping out with all the meets, travel and setup, over the past couple of weeks.  I know this end of season stretch where we are constantly running around can be stressful, so thank you all so much.

Schedule for this week.

Conference - NO MORNINGS
Sectionals - Monday AM West, Wednesday AM South
Swimming on Mon-Wednesday is the normal 3:30-5:30(plus dryland Tuesday)
Practice for Thursday and Friday is TBA.  My understanding is that there is early release on Thursday and no school on Friday.  I will be trying to get a pool with blocks to practice starts and exchanges.  I will update that ASAP.

Conference on Saturday will be starting at approximately 2pm, I believe.  I am not 100% certain of the start time, as I haven't gotten an official meet packet this year, but that is what is posted on their website.  Girls Tapering for Conference will hopefully be getting to ride a minibus.  We will be leaving from SOUTH if we get a bus at 11:45am.

I will update the girls tomorrow with the practice schedule.

Finally, I am combining the blogs.  So I will be marking the top of posts for which team the post is for.  Otherwise, no noticeable difference will be seen.

Meet Week Number 2

I am going to keep this as concise as possible since there is a large amount of information here.  We have three meets this week, so please be prepared to be in for a long week.

First, everyone should know what they are going to be tapering for.  IF they do not know what meet they are tapering for please make sure that the talk to me tomorrow morning.  IF the swimmer is tapering for conference they have 2 morning practices this week, Monday and Wednesday please, and no morning practice next week.  Sectional swimmers have 3 morning practices this week.

Thursday we are at Hinsdale Central.  Please leave right after school.  We will be doing a split warm-up again, as we did at Lyons.  Meet starts at 5pm, they will have diving.  It is also their Senior night.

Friday is our Senior night at BR Ryall. Girls need to get there at 6:15pm.  Meet will start right around 7pm.  This is both our and St. Francis' Senior Night.  Sectional team will have practice from 3:30-5:30 in the Oak Brook Terrace Tower, as well as their morning practice.

Saturday we are at Metea Valley for our final invite of the season.  We will get in the pool at 8:30am so please get to the pool at about 8:15am.  The meet starts at 10am.  I know a lot of kids are test taking on Saturday.  I would love to see if I can get some of the kids into the meet towards the end.  Please have everyone check the facebook page and update the post with whom is taking the test.

Practice Change for 10/9/12

Practice tomorrow will be from 8:30-10:30 at the Esplanade Fitness Complex.  The address is

2001 Butterfield Rd.
Downers Grove, IL

I have no more information at this time about where in the complex the fitness facility is.  If I get more I will post it.

Moving onto suits.  For people that don't know "suits" are the high tech suits that all the swimmers in the Olympics, and most major competitions wear.  The provide a huge advantage over regular suits as the reduce drag and reduce muscle vibration, which is a leading cause of muscle fatigue.  For more detailed information on suits I suggest you read back to some of the older blog posts.  I don't want to say they are required, but to fail to wear one at a championship meet is leaving a large amount of time on the table.  Last year I don't believe that a single individual point was scored at Sectionals by a girl in a regular suit.  They aren't required, but I do want everyone to have one.  There is no one suit that is best for everyone,  the suit that is best for each swimmer is the one that fits the best.  The price points and explanations of the suits below.

Blue Seventy Nero TX(the older suit)-$240(higher than last year, sorry)
This is my favorite suit on the market for a nice mix of High Performance and costs.

Speedo LZR Elite(the one with panels)-$225
The best suit available from Speedo at the moment.  Doesn't fit some people through the hips

Speedo LZR Pro(the one with gold stitching)-$160
The best of the "cheap" suits.  Vastly inferior to the above suits.  However, will still get the job done.  If this is the suit please make sure that the suit fits perfectly as even a minor fitting issue will cause the suit to balloon(which makes it worse than a regular suit).

There are also new suits from TYR and Arena. The Arena suit is the absolute best suit available, but is EXTREMELY expensive, and not worth the jump in cost.  I would suggest only looking into these suits if one of the previous options doesn't provide a suitable fit.

5 more weeks till Sectionals

I apologize for the brevity in advance.  Doing blog post from a phone is a pain.

First, the calendar was updated last week and hopefully will remain the same.  Obviously, this depends greatly on whether the Lifestart pool is up and running soon.  I will post Saturday practice soon.

Next,  I want to pass along that I am fairly pleased with our performance at Andrew on Saturday.  Despite only finishing third, we scored more points than we were supposed to, which is always a sign of a good day of swimming.  Also, we had more than 50% season best times, all in all a good day.

Finally, I am continuing to work on Sectional roster as we  go through the week.  I am waiting to see more results posted from this weekends meets before I show the girls.  As this comes out I will be telling some of the girls that they only have 2 mornings this week as they start to focus on the Conference meet.

Change of Practice Schedule.

The pool at Lifestart Wellness is broken.  As such practice is still very much in limbo for today.  Anyone who is not swimming in the meet tomorrow will have no practice for this evening(obviously excused for attendance purposes).  All people that are swimming tomorrow will have practice at some point some where tonight.  Currently it appears that we will be swimming from 6-6:45pm at BR Ryall YMCA.  We are now from 5-6pm at Healthtrack.  I will post more information to the facebook page and the blog as soon as I get it.

Tomorrow all people swimming need to arrive by 8:30am as we will be getting in the pool shortly after.  The meet starts at 10am.  Anyone not swimming will be given 2 hours of bonus attendance for attending, they will also be kept busy with splits and camera duty.

Practice for Monday and Tuesday are as follows.  Monday we will have dryland from 8-9 at Biester, and then go to Bensenville from 10-12am.  Tuesday we will, hopefully, be at Lifestart from 9-11am.

October is Upon us

We have two meets this week so I want to start with the procedure for them.

I will be bringing the final individual entries for the Andrew Invite with me to practice tomorrow.  Relays will be inferred tomorrow as well.  Currently there is a couple of athletes that are relay only swimmers.  I will let them know who they are, relay only swimmers are guaranteed their relay spots.  All other relay spots will be finalized after the meet on Thursday.  We have a large number of relay spots that are split by less than a blink of an eye, and given the manner with which we treat Andrew I want to make sure everyone has the best possibility to swim on a relay.  Anyone who is swimming on Saturday needs to be at the pool at 8:30am.  Please remember to bring real food to eat during the meet.  We had some people sugar crashing on Saturday at Wildcat.

People who are not swimming at Andrew will be swimming their best events on Thursday night against team Sim's.  This provides everyone the best opportunity to perform high quality swims going into the end of the season.  For the Thursday meet please leave immediately after school we will be getting in the water around 3:45pm again.

Dryland this week goes West/South/South.

Weekly Update

I want to start with a quick meet recap from the tri of swim meets.  On Thursday we ended up losing to Oak Park by 20.  We did have a 2 event winner with Marina S. winning both the 200IM and the 100 breaststroke.

Friday night at the West Chicago Championships we looked much sharper.  I was hoping to have 2 people per event final to swim on Saturday, we ended up averaging just under 2 people per event.  Given that we were swimming "off" events for a lot of people I could be nothing short of pleased with the result.  Saturday continued the good swims with almost every single person who earned a second swim dropping even more time from the previous night.  Though we had no even winners, and very few top 6 finishes we still were able to finish 4th only 4 point out of 3rd place.   Also the A 400 free relay of Marina, Paige, Vicki, and Katie A. broke the F/S record from conference last year.  The girls decided to give the swimmer of the meet to Katie A.

Notes about this week.  We will be having mornings this week at West/South/West.  The meet on Thursday is at York High School and starts at 5PM.  The girls need to be there ready to swim by 3:30pm.  I expect the meet to last a little over 2 hours since York has diving and the tend to run three levels.

This is our final week outside.  Next week we will begin practice in the dungeon.

Meet Week Part 1

We finally get to start our West Suburban dual meet schedule.  I can almost hear the girls breathing sighs of relief.  Our schedule is very busy this week so if the girls can they need to get way ahead on their schoolwork.  Morning practices will be at West, South, South this week.  Athletes are still encouraged to come to Friday morning practice.  The West Chicago meet in the past has seen lots of great swims, but is still not a focus meet.

With so many people lacking some attendance points everyone that is eligible is currently entered to swim on Friday night at West Chicago.  However, since the meet is prelim and finals it is unlikely for everyone to swim on Saturday.  I still want everyone to come and cheer for the team(no they don't have to warm-up).  To encourage this anyone who comes on Saturday, but isn't swimming, will be given 2 hours of bonus attendance.

Stay tuned for start times and warm-up times for this week

The Cold

So as we start to deal with less enjoyable parts of swimming outdoors for as long as we do I do want to discuss something.  I don't care if it is cold, the pool is heated.  People who are not swimming and complaining will be sent home.

Hero Week

I can hear the groans of all the older girls from here.  Before I get into hero week a couple of notes.  First, we had a very solid meet at Lyons on Saturday.  While we ended up an unimpressive 9th we did have a ton of very good fast swims from nearly everyone.  A couple of things could still use some improvement though.  Everyone needs to talk to me before their races.  Each race has a specific strategy and is never the same from meet to meet, even for the exact same race.  The other major issue from this weekend was people on ipods/phones.  Obviously I was on the opposite side of the pool due to space issues this weekend, but if I see that we will be having problems.  Being on the phone is disrespectful to your teammates who should have been cheering for you during your swims.  There will be no further warnings, only removal from meets.

Next I am in the process of uploading videos from Lyons to the youtube page.  Link below.

Glenbard West/South Youtube

Back to Hero Week.  As I assume every knows by now I am a former Instructor for Naval Special Warfare, and have lost men that were once my students.  This week will simply be a small reminder of what some people are willing to do for all of our small freedoms.  This week however I will also be discussing one of the more niche aspects of swimming thanks to the recent Paralympics.

Next time that you/r daughter comes home complaining of how hard things are, or how it hurts to move, a simple reminder that some people are dealing with worse probably doesn't go far, but this might.

Most people are blessed with a fully functional body and mind that understands limitations and the perceived consequences of pushing pasts these limits.  This should serve as a simple reminder that an unfortunate few are given a crippled body but a mind that doesn't question the limits of reality, but instead a mind that questions if their are limits at all.  These are people whom we should all aspire to emulate, you have your chance every day at practice, more than most people could ask for.  Never take your advantageous situation for granted, your own retrospect will always be the most honest thing you can imagine.

New Page and Video

First wanted to let everyone know that I added a new page to the blog.  Up along the top bar is now the tab for the Address Book of all the places we will be going this season.  I will be constantly updating it so that everyone always has plenty of time to find where they need to be going.

Next comment is on some video taping I have been doing at practice.  One of the greatest advancements for coaches of the last 4 years is the ability to have video taping equipment on hand and ready to use at all times.    This is especially handy when I am having a problem getting a concept into a swimmers head.  All the videos taken at practice will get added to the facebook page since that is the only place I can easily upload from my phone.

Reminder we are in the water at 7:45am tomorrow.

Weekly Update

Not a whole lot to add this week to the discussion of the season.  But do want to update a couple of things.

First, our first meet is this Saturday at Lyons South HS.  Please be ready to get in the water at 7:45am.  Anyone not in the water on time will be considered late.  The meet starts at 9am and was run fairly quick last year.  I do want to let everyone know that despite the attendance issues everyone will be swimming at least 2 events in this meet.  This decision was made since this is a relay meet and is meant to be a fun introduction into the season.  Yes the times will count, but in the past every one of these times was eliminated well before the Champ team was selected.  That said we have little over 2 weeks until the West Chicago entries are due, if the attendance isn't there then the athlete will not swim.

Second,  both drylands are at South this week.  I apologize, but I screwed up our schedule last week without thinking about Labor Day.  This is the only time that this issue will come up.

Hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend, this is the last non Sunday off until after season.

See everyone tomorrow afternoon

Intersquad Recap

So the annual intersquad meet went off quite well on Saturday.  Despite the only 2 week difference we had a vast improvement in what I believe was every single event.  The teams ended up being almost perfectly balanced with the meet coming down to the very last relay.  Kudos to the Green team for winning a very close 4 point meet.  Hopefully everyone came away with a basic understanding of how the meets work and what is expected of them at the each meet.  I am sure some of the older girls also got to see just what it takes to put together a meet lineup.  I believe everyone got to enjoy their cupcakes...........

Tomorrow the 27th is the start of morning practices.  This week we will be going West/South/West in the morning.  When morning practice is at Glenbard West we will be meeting in the Fieldhouse at the far west end of Biester.  Enter through the front doors of the building, take one of the stairwells down to the basement and just walk to the back of the building.  At Glenbard South we enter on the North side of the building through the athletic tunnel.  The first day I will wait a little bit extra, but after that once I close the door to South at 6:00am the door is locked until after school.  The same rules on timeliness will apply at West as they do at practice, meaning anyone late will be docked attendance points.  My final note on morning dryland this week is that anyone with little to no weight room experience should try to make all of the drylands this week.  We will be going over all 5 basic movements this week and it is much easier to teach it thoroughly 1 time than to teach it over and over again in a rush.

The calendar is updated a bit more, let me know if something jumps out as wrong.  No practice on Labor Day.

Please check the attendance calendar regularly so you know where you/your child stands attendance wise.  Also if I make a mistake please email me as soon as possible.  I try to update it daily.

So I finally am getting around to updating everything.  First, the calendar through September is up for the most part.  We are missing a couple of meets and I have to clean it up, but it is now posted.  We do not have practice on Labor Day.  The attendance sheet is posted.  Keep an eye on it so you know what your current attendance is.

Now onto the most important part of the post.  Intersquad week starts today.  The schedule for the week will be as follows.

Monday - Trivia
Tuesday - Stupid Relays
Wednesday - Water Games
Thursday - Dryland Races
Friday - Random Stuff
Saturday Intersquad Meet

All of this will be done during normal practice times.  So without further ado, the teams.
