Intersquad Meet, Suit Fitting, Hinsdale Dual

1) Suit fitting will be Wednesday immediately following practice, 4:30pm at COD.  This will be very quick.  Athletes must buy the team speedo(plain black) and athletes whom don't have a drag suit will need to purchase a drag suit as well.  Team suits are replaced annually, but the drag suit will last many years if taken care of properly.

Team Suit - $31. Drag Suit - $36.

2) Intersquad Meet is tonight and this will be updated post meet.  I think the boy's had a ton of fun with the week.

3) Dual meet at Hinsdale Central on Friday.  But will leave from West immediately following school, go to South then to the Hinsdale Central.  Following the meet we have been invited to stay for some sandwiches at Central, then will return home.  On our return route we will be going in the opposite order, so South then West.

Saturday practice is TBA at this time.

Intersquad Week

Congrats to everyone for doing a wonderful job of sorting out all the issues last week.  Extremely pleased and happy with the results.

This week we will be starting full training in earnest.  We will also be on full Varsity/JV split.  This does mean that JV athletes now only go to AM dryland at their home school.  So a JV athlete from West only has dryland at West, and vice versa for South kids.  On days that dryland is not at the home school JV athletes are off.

We will not have practice on Saturday.  All possible pools are unavailable.

Intrasquad Week!
Schedule as follows

Tuesday - Dryland Game
Wednesday - Relays

Before getting into full details on the boy's week.

Girl's banquet is on Wednesday night.  If you haven't please contact Nancy Meyers who is organizing the banquet.  I will be collecting all jackets on Wednesday Night.  Any athlete who doesn't turn it in will be billed by the district.

Boy's first full week of the season.  This included AM practice.  All athletes have full AM practices this week, this is only for this week.  Our AM Schedule goes.  Tuesday 6AM - West, Wednesday 6AM - South, Friday 6AM - West.

Entrance at West is the main Biester Gym entrance(lower building)

Entrance at South is Door 19.

Saturday practice is currently TBA, I am hoping to have that figured out tomorrow before practice.  Practice will be sometime between 9:30am and 4:00pm.

Carpool's appear to be set.  Please know that carpools can't change, and this is the only allowable driving combination.  If you have any questions please contact me.

Finally, we have team pictures immediately after practice on Monday 11/30, pictures are at West in Biester Gym.  I know I don't have order forms, but they will be handed out at practice.  You can also order online once pictures come in.

Boy's Season 2015/2016

First, a quick congrats to the girl's on a great season.  Banquet will be Wednesday December 2nd at South in the Commons.

Moving onto boy's tryouts.

Monday the 23rd of November.
All West athletes should meet in Biester lobby immediately after school.  We will be sorting out carpool and shuttle bus.
All South athletes should meet in the GS lobby between the main gym and the fieldhouse immediately after school.  We will be sorting out carpool and shuttle bus.

We will then figure everything else out during the last part of Monday practice going forward.

All athletes must be registered in PowerSchools, have an up to date physical and have completed the extracurricular code of conduct form.

I do want to welcome Coach Vince to our program.  I hope to get a full write up on him later in the week.  He will be running our JV program for the boy's.

I wanted to let you know that we will be running a very short parent informational meeting this coming Thursday November 5th, 2015 at Glenbard West in Rooms 224/225 at 7pm..

This meeting is non-committal and way for me to explain team policies, procedures, and expectations for this coming season.  Even if you aren't certain on whether or not you will be swimming it is still highly encouraged for both athlete and parent to come to this meeting.

We will be going over our parent handbook in detail and then discuss any questions that anyone may have.  To find the parent handbook please go to the team website/blog at gswswim.blogspot.com  You will also see a blog post about this meeting.  The calendar is currently up to date until Winter Break.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me.

Andrew Week

Lots of information today so please check the whole thing.

1) DGN Dual meet this coming Thursday.  Bus will go West->South and reverse on the return.  Should be a relatively quick meet, though it could be their Senior night. 5pm meet start.

2) Andrew Meet.  Bus will leave at 7:40am from South.  Meet starts at 10am.  Should be home by 3pm.  I will get the roster to the girl's by Tuesday, possible tomorrow.

3) Tech suits.  For anyone who doens't know what a tech suit it look through some of the older blogs from early October.  Goes into great detail on them, what they do, and why they are important.  Simply put, tech suits are legal cheating, as they flat out work and make you faster.  So the question is what is the best, or proper suit for you.  The following are the 4 tiers that I consider for Senior Level swimming.  Please note:all pricing is for the highest level suit within that tier, not the average.

Tier 1 - This is not a tech suit, simply a new suit.  Any new, tight fitting suit.

Tier 2 - Stitched Suit.  Basically the entry level tech suit.  These are a good bit cheaper than the higher tier suits, but aren't as high quality from a performance stand point or from a how long they last stand point.  Example: Speedo LZR Pro - $179.

Tier 3 - Bonded Suit.  Joints are now bonded instead of stitched.  This helps the suit be both faster and to last a bit longer.  For the most part, these are the suits that were worn in the 2012 Olympics.  Examples: Speedo LZR Elite/Arena Carbon Pro/Blue70 Nero 14/TYR Avictor $300.

Tier 4 - Plastic Bonded.  This is the newest level of suit on the market, and you will pay for it.  This will be on your TV in the Olympics pretty much exclusively.  That said, I don't recommend these as the price point is too high for High School Aged athletes.  Also with the suits being so new we have no idea how durable the suits are. Example: Speedo LZR X, Arena Carbon Flex - $312.

Finally, the most important part of tech suits is finding the correct suit that fits.  There is nothing worse for a suit than to be too loose.  Girl's also have to consider the size and shape of their bodies into which suit is the best for them. Some suits are notorious for having really wide hips(Speedo), where other suits are known for being extremely narrow through the bust(Blue70).  Basically, get to Swimmer's Edge, and try on some suits.  Take care of this ASAP as they always run out of suits.

Moving forward to this weekend there are 3 important pieces of information

1) Glenbard West Pep Rally - I just got this information, so sorry for the late information.  All West athletes are expected to participate in the Pep Rally.  They need to arrive down by the weight room in Biester by 5:30pm.  Pep Rally is scheduled to start at 6:00pm.

2) Saturday AM practice - Varsity only at the YMCA. 7-9am

3) Saturday West Booster Pancake Breakfast - The annual Booster Breakfast on Saturday should be attended by as many athletes as possible immediately after morning practice.  Costs is $6 and a great way to support the Booster program who has helped us a ton over the past few years(jackets....)

Weekly Update OPRF and West Chicago

Held for meet Results

At this point of the year there isn't a ton of information to update.  Please make sure everyone is staying up to speed on food, sleep, and school.

Thursday - OPRF meet.  Bus will go West then South.  No diving, so quick meet, however traffic issues.  Meet starts about 5pm

Friday - I still don't have the meet packet from West Chicago, but this will be a limited entry meet.  Bus is right after school and goes West then South.  At this time I believe anyone not swimming will have practice.  Meet will start about 5pm.

Saturday - Same roster as the Friday night meet.  I will finalize once I get the meet packet, but will be leaving about 11am.  Meet starts at 1pm.

LT Recap and 1st week inside

First the LT recap.  We finished a very respectable 5th place, which is either our highest or 2nd highest finish at that meet ever.  The F/S broke the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay records, though I won't update the board until end of the season.

The following went team best times...
A. Davis
M. Rosenthal
C. Lohman
M. Murphy
S. Pasinski

This doesn't include all the 50 and 100 best relays splits, no way for me to pull that comparison.

Medalist(Top 3)
A. Davis
J. Hall
J. Denenberg
M. Murphy
S. Green

Flat out, that was a great meet.

Moving forward to this week we are moving inside to COD.  This means we will now have the 2 arrival times as some athletes have early dismissal, while others don't.

Athletes that are getting early dismissal must talk to the athletic department and/or attendance tomorrow to make sure everything is in place to get dismissed early.  If there are any issues let me know and I will do anything I can to help out.

Transportation to COD (the team provides no transportation back to the school) will be as follows this week.

Monday - Early dismissal from West.  West Freshman will be shuttled by a parent.  South appears to be covered.

Tuesday/Wednesday/Friday - West early dismissal will be riding a white bus to the pool from West.    West regular dismissal should be covered by carpool.  From South, both early dismissal and regular dismissal appear to be covered.

Thursday Swim Meet @ Hinsdale Central - Bus will be going West -> South -> Hinsdale.  So West kids need to be ready at 3:00pm, South kids ready no later than 3:05pm.  This is assuming they don't change the pick-up time on me again.  We will be going in reverse order home so South first, then West.  They will have diving so have homework or reading to do.

Saturday Swim Meet @ B.R. Ryall YMCA.  Senior night against St. Francis.  Warm-ups will be at 6:00pm, Meet starts 6:15/6:20pm.  Meet will not last very long.

Bartlett Results

Overall, a decent meet.  We left our calling card as I like to do early in the year.

JV Score 133-35 we won
Varsity 76-92 Bartlett won

Once again we were by far the deeper team.  Unfortunately, 2 kids can win a dual meet.

Results were solid on the whole with a number of new team bests.  My only concern is a couple of swimmers were well off just 2 weeks ago.  We will be discussing that at practice tomorrow.

Event winners - Varsity Only
J. Denenberg
S. Green

New Team Best Times - This only counts times performed while directly performing for GWS as keeping track of other times would be virtually impossible from a database standpoint.

H. Beckham
M. Beckham
M. Bissett
M. Bradley
J. Denenberg
E. Eismann
A. Gniatczyk

First Meet's of the Season!

I am going to have to keep this short and sweet, as I wrote this last night and it didn't go through

First, we have 2 meets this week!

Thursday we are at Bartlett.  Bus will go from South to West to Bartlett.  On return it will go in reverse order so West first then South.  This meet is scheduled to start at 4:30, but probably won't start until 4:45-5:00pm.  Should be back no later than 7:00pm.  All athletes will be swimming in this meet.

Saturday is a limited entry meet and the roster for the meet will be available at practice on Tuesday pm.  Bus will leave from South at 7:15am, then go to LT South.  Meet is scheduled to start at 9:00am and will be done around 11:00am.

All athletes will ride the bus home unless they have school events to return for(eg. band/choir).

Other major news is AM practice schedule change.  New schedule is as follows.

Tuesday @ West
Wednesday @ South
Friday @ Alternates

All JV are expected to maintain their home only schedule.

This came up recently and as I had about half the girl's tell me they didn't eat breakfast today, please read over/listen to this NPR story.

We will have the extra shuttle this week for getting to Butterfield from west, I believe South is still okay.

Finally, the girl's requested a return of Hero Week.  I'm not going to get into great detail on it here, as I have already written a very long piece about it HERE.  If anyone has questions on it, please let me know.

Intersquad Wrap-up and No Meet Week

Before we get into details of this week, a congratulations to the Blue team for picking up the win!

During the week Blue team slowly build up a 16 point lead.  A dominant performance in Trivia, and Dryland games was just too much for the Green team to overcome.  The meet itself was a very well swam meet, even with less than ideal weather.  The score was only a 5 point difference going into the 400 Free Relay, which basically means the entire week came down to the last relay.  Huge kudos to every athlete as this was arguably the fastest intrasquad meet we have had all year.

This week we have no meets, but we do have our full practice schedule.  Also of importance, the JV athletes now have practice only at their HOME school.  In other words JV athletes from South only go to South AM practice, and JV from West only go to West AM practice.

Saturday will be for Varsity only, but location is TBA.

Most important part of the week is getting to practice.

We are "carpooling" this week to Butterfield.  However, we are just a little bit short on total drivers for Tuesday-Friday.  Therefore, we will be doing the following.

South - Covered all days by carpool

West - Monday carpool only due to orientation.  Tuesday-Friday there will be a white bus to help get athletes to Butterfield.  Any athlete who takes the bus must be on the bus by 2:40pm or they will be left at school.  I will explain this in more detail at practice tomorrow.

EVERYONE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR GETTING HOME.  This can include carpools or parents, but there will be NO bus returning to the high schools.

As a reminder if you are going to be missing a meetplease let me know ASAP.

Intersquad Week

Before getting into the fun stuff got to make some announcements.

This week is the yellow bus week.  All afternoon practices this week we will be bussing to and from practice.  A yellow bus will pick us up from Glenbard West at "3pm" then go straight to Glenbard South.  Practice and intersquad activities till 6pm.  Everyone has to ride the bus both ways every day, unless you have a signed waiver prior to practice.  If you need a waiver the athletic office should have it, make sure I sign it the day before you plan on missing.

AM practices this week are for ALL athletes.  We are still going through the basics and will have all athletes at both practices.  As a reminder athletes are responsible for getting to and from AM practices.

Anyone who has a gear bag, please bring it on Monday.  We plan on starting to use equipment.

On to intersquad week!

First, the teams.

First Full Week of Girls 2015

This is an extremely busy week, so please make sure to read through everything.

All weekday swim practices are from 8am-10am at Butterfield.  These are now required practices.

Practice on Saturday(as well as next week) is TBA.  We are trying to find a pool still, I just don't know what time it will be.  This Saturday and next Saturday will be for all athletes, both Varsity and JV.

We also have our intro to the weight room this week.  Please check the calendar.  This is for all athletes, both Varsity and JV.

Monday, immediately following practice is team suit try-ons and purchases.  You must purchase your own suit.  These are required for competition, and are not to be worn at practice.  Swimmer's Edge will also have some extra goggles, caps, and suits for sale if needed.

Wednesday is the parent meeting.  Team meeting will be at 6pm at West in Room 224.  Immediately following the team meeting is the all sports meeting.  This meeting is also required for all families.  Families from South, the all sports meeting will count for your South requirements as well, so you don't have to attend both.  Do not be late, as I have to start right at 6pm to finish on time.

Thursday is Picture Day.  This will be at 12noon in the Gym at Glenbard West.  Apparel will be jean shorts and team suit.  Paperwork for Picture Day will get handed out either Monday or Tuesday.  Immediately following pictures we will have dryland.

If you have not signed up through PowerSchool, or if you have not turned in a physical athletes can't participate in practice.

Finally, I am aware there is a ton of registration and required things going on at the schools this week.  Please let me know when/if you will be missing as I can't keep track of all 40 girls dates without some help.

Due to the extremely late running of the USA Swimming summer schedule the first 3 days of practice are OPTIONAL.  Anyone who is in town is encouraged to come to practice, but no attendance will be taken.  We will be using those 3 days for drills, basic introduction to our coaching language, and some basics of preparing the newer athletes for full tryouts the next week.

Starting on Monday August 17th, 2015 all practices will be required. Practices will still be from 8am-10am at Butterfield Park District.  We will also be adding some weightroom introduction that week.  Dates and Times are TBA as I need to hear back from the football teams.

Also on Monday August 17th, we will be doing suit fittings immediately following practice.  The uniform is required and not part of your Activity Fees.

Please know that all athletes MUST register in Power School prior to their first day at practice.  More information on PowerSchools please contact your specific High School.

We will also have a parent meeting on Wednesday August 19th immediately prior to the all sports meeting.  All families are required to have a representitive at both the swim team meeting and the All-Sports meeting.

Transportation to and from practice is still being figured out at this time.  We are looking into setting up carpools.  Due to our pool time we can not take a bus to COD.

Finally, please check the Handbook at the top of this page for a general outline of the team.  It is slightly out of date, but there will be no major changes.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Conference Week 2015

First and foremost, congrats to everyone who swam on Friday and Saturday on an absolutely wonderful weekend of swimming.  I believe every single athlete put up a team best time.

This week we have no dual meets.  We do have conference on Saturday.  The schedule for Saturday at conference is

Conference Focused Athletes take bus from West(this is still TBA as we don't have a bus yet)-11:50am
All athletes arrive at York HS-12:15pm
Warm-ups - 12:30p
Meet start - 2:00p
Meet end - Late

The biggest issue is of course we don't have a guarenteed bus yet.  I am waiting to hear back from all locations on if we can grab one.

For Monday 2/2.  At this time Glenbard District 87 still has school.  However, COD is closed.  This currently means we have no pool time for tomorrow 2/2/15.

The Sectional group does not have AM practice on 2/2/15.  PM practice is TBA and will be communicated once it is figured out.

Hinsdale and Metea Update

First piece of information is the schedule for the Hinsdale Duel on Friday 1/30.  Once again leave immediately after school.  I want to get in the water at 3:45p.  Meet starts at 5:00pm.  This is their Senior night, but will be a 2 level meet and should be fairly fast.

Saturday we are at the Metea Valley Invite.  Last night I communicated to everyone on if they are swimming or not at the meet.  We will begin warm-ups at 8:30am, so please be at the pool by 8:15am.  Meet starts at 10am, and we are normally out of there around 1pm.

Friday AM practice is for the Sectional group only.

Finally, tech suits.  I will go over this in extreme detail tonight with the boy's.  If you have any questions please contact me ASAP so that I can help you out.  We use Swimmer's Edge in Woodridge as our provider and they will help with a great price.  These are not required, but are EXTREMELY recommended.  They are essentially legal performance enhancement.

Last Week of Regular Season

Great job last week by everyone.  Looking at results from Hinsdale Invite kids competed well and saw some big steps foward for some people.

Moving forward this week to the final week of the regular season.  We will once again be at Hinsdale for their Senior night on Friday night.  As the usual leave immediately after school.

Saturday we are at Metea Valley for a big Invite.  I don't have the meet form yet, but in the past it has been 8:30 arrival and 10am start.  As with most meets about 3 hours.

Finally, we will be starting the Championship split this week. Everyone will have normal mornings on Monday and Wednesday.  I will be communicating to the athletes who don't need to be at practice Friday AM.

Victory!

First, congrats to all the boy's on the first ever conference meet win.

Second, please know that the YMCA is charging a $5 admission for anyone attending the meet.

Chris

Few Quick notes about this weekend at DGN and the St. Francis Senior Night

First, meet tonight at DGN.  No new news to report.

For tomorrow night's meet at the YMCA.  Athletes need to be ready to swim at 5pm.  Meet starts at 5:30pm.  Please note- Everyone must sign in at the YMCA.  This could lead to a rather long line.  Please plan for that and arrive early.  Senior recognition will be done during the standard dive break.

Monday practice is currently TBA.

We do have a meet on Tuesday at Lyons Township.  Athletes are reminded to study during the day and to bring study materials to the meet.

Senior Night Week

First, a ton of great swims last Friday at York.  Very proud of how everyone competed coming out of Winter Break and after a couple or snow days.  A very large number of team best times.  We ended up losing by about 30, but 13 of those from diving.  Overall a very good meet.

This week we will be returning to our normal practice schedule.  This includes going to COD after school for practice.  AM schedule goes West/South/West.  Please note that AM practice on Friday is optional due to finals.

Friday night we have a meet at Downers Grove North.  Everyone can take their time getting over there as we can't get in till 4pm.

Saturday we have our "home" meet against St. Francis for our Senior Night.  We will be getting in the water to warm-up at 5pm.  Meet is scheduled to start at 5:30pm.  Meet should be over by 7pm.  Saturday AM the Varsity group only will have practice from 9:30-11:30am @ Esplanade.

Finally, our meet with Lyons has been moved to Tuesday.  I know this is an institute day and the night before finals, so I'm not certain what is going on with that now.

Return to School

As has been stated for a while we will not be returning to COD this week.  We will be maintaining the schedule we used the last week of school in December for the foreseeable future.  Soon as I find out COD has opened back up I will pass along the information.

With the potential of some severe weather this week please make sure you read the following.  We will be following the districts suggestions for all practices.  If school is closed then we will not be having practice either before or after school.  For the late night practices if weather appears to be taking a turn for the worse during that time I will text the captains who will text everyone else.  Also if a text is necessitated I will also add a blog posts.  For all AM practices we will be having practice unless school is cancelled prior to the start of practice.

The meet on Friday is at York High School.  The traditionally start with diving, but also expect the swimming to start around 5:10pm due to a low number of divers.
