Winter Break Week 1

Before getting into this week. Quick wrap up from the last couple of meets.

We did lose both meets, which is a bit frustrating as we should be better.  Felt that the times we universally pretty good, but the way we were getting to the times left a lot to be desired.  A bunch of sloppiness, poor race strategy, not finishing the meet, and other issues that are mostly about mental toughness left a lot to be desired.

WeGo Wrap up and First Dual Meets

First the recap of a tremendous meet at the Wildcat Relays.  The team finished a very respectable 3rd place, including a couple of the top teams in the state, as well as a whole number of programs that are right at our level.  Most importantly, the boy's raced well from start to finish, which is a huge thing at this time of year.

It is almost impossible to parse new team best times on a relay meet, so skipping that for this meet.

Athletes with a top 3 finish
John Kilinski
Sean Lapano
Sean Maloney
Timo Curtis
Gage Ridinger
Colin Janis
Nick Andres
Ian Holm
Jack Schoenfeld

Moving onto this week.  First, practice information.

Varsity has normal AM practice on Tuesday @ West and on Thursday @ South.
On Saturday both Varsity and JV will have practice.  JV is from 1-3pm @ COD.  This is the only Saturday JV practice all season.  Varsity will be communicated at practice.

Swim Meet Information.
Thursday night we are at DGN.  Bus will be at West at 3pm, then go straight to South.  Meet starts at 5pm, diving is first.  On return we will go to South First then to West.  Normally home roughly 7pm.

Friday night we are at Hindale Central.  Central is one of the best teams in the country and will be a very good test to see where we are at a highly competitive level.  Bus information is identical to DGN, we will get home closer to 8pm.  Meet starts at 5pm and diving is in the middle of the meet.

So this wasn't updating

First, and by far the foremost, is my apologies for this not updating.  It was never my intention.

Moving forward.

First, lots of great swimming Friday night.  Kids are super tired and were, for the most part, consistent within their times.

We had no event winners

Team Best Times

Moving forward to swim meets left.
1) Metea this Saturday for all of Varsity.  Bus will leave from South at 8am.  Meet starts at 10am.
2) JV "State" is Thursday the 27th at York.  All JV will be competing.  Bus goes from South to West.  Meet starts at 5pm.
3) Conference is Saturday the 29th at Lyons South.  Roster for the meet will be at practice on Monday the 24th.  Bus will be from South at 8am.  Meet starts at 10am.

Finally, and this is a big one.   Tech Suits.  Tech Suits are basically legal cheating, there is a reason 100% of swims in the Olympics had them on.  There are 4 Tiers of tech suits.

1) Brand new swim suit.  Basically a brand new swim suit  that fits very snugly and ideally.  This is recommended for newer swimmers.

2) Entry Level.  These are much older suits and traditionally much cheaper than newer suits.  They tend to not work very long, but is good for a single meet.  Recommended for JV athletes who have a either 2 years of HS experience or a full year of club experience.

3) Mid-Tier.  Basically the modern suits from a generation ago.  Basically the suits worn in 2008/2012.  These tend to be bonded suits and can be relatively expensive.  They tend to last decent amount of swims.  Recommended for Sectional level athletes.

4) Near Top Tier.  Modern suits, excluiding the very top tier.  These aren't exorbiently expensive, but aren't cheap.  These are bonded suits, and can be very fragile.  Recommended for Sectional level+.

There is another tier, I don't recommend.  Ultimately, the fit is the most important part.  As such prior to purchase they need to be tried on.  Go to Swimmer's Edge, they know the suits, and they know what to recommend for you.  Please let them know what team you are from.

Final dual meet

Prior to getting into the upcoming week wanted to recap last week's meet.

At this time no results have been formally turned in to me so this will get more detail as we get results.  I do know performance on Thursday was lackluster,  but completely within the norms of this time of the year.   Both Saturday meets went very well with a good number of best times, relays in particular were once again a highlight of the meets.

Moving onto this week.

First a couple of practice changes for the next 2 days.

Monday all levels 2:30-4:30 @ COD. We understand this is a late change, unfortunately a reality of not owning a pool.

Tuesday Weights is at 1pm for Varsity. Swimming is normal 2:30-4:30.

Saturday Varsity practice is TBA. Expect very early.  We will have practice.

Friday meet @ LT South. This is their Senior night.  Diving will start at 5pm, so swimming will be at about 5:20

York Results, Friday, Saturday

Very quickly before getting into York Results.

Friday - ALL TICKETS ARE DUE, sold and unsold.  Any tickets not turned in are the responsibility of the athlete.

Saturday - No practice.  All pools unavailable at reasonable times.  This does mean everything going forward is getting looked at.

York Results.  For the most part we swam well off of our best events, and swam very well.  Extremely pleased with 400 Free relays(both JV and Varsity) as they were extremely fast, especially considering the temperature in the building.

Fundraiser Tickets Due This Week!

Before getting into what all is going on this week quick recap of the crazy week last week.

OPRF was a bit onesided, but we did have a number of good swims.

Event winners:
Jane Denenberg

Point Scorers:

Claire Lohman
Kylie Miskovic
Ania Gniatczyk

The Wildcat Prelim/Final was our multi-day meet that the kids love.  We finished in 4th place and would have easily been 3rd if we didn't have a F/S meet on Saturday as well.  Given where I expected to finish that is a huge improvement.  Special note to the relays, as they were all fantastic.

Moving Forward to this week

Wednesday night we have our dual meet with York.  Meet starts at 5pm.  We will be going South to West and then West to South on the way home.  They do diving first so swimming will likely be about 5:20pm

Tuesday we need any tickets that have been sold for the fundraiser turned in.

Friday all tickets(sold and unsold) must be turned in.  Athletes will be responsible for costs of any tickets not returned.

Assignments for who is working when next week will be at practice no later than Friday.

Varsity practice is still TBA.  We are still looking for a pool.

Moving onto this week we have something going on the entire second half of the week....

Wednesday - Fundraiser Ticket Turn-in RD1.  Everyone should have had enough time to sell their first 10.  Fundraiser questions need to go to Chris's Email.   If you haven't please fill out the google form HERE as soon as possible.

Thursday - OPRF Dual meet @ OPRF.  This is our longest car ride of the year.  The meet itself is always super fast(normally back on bus by 6:45p).  This is there Senior Night, so that will be a bit slower, but nothing dramatic.  All athletes are competing.  Bus West/South out and South/West back, 5pm start.

Friday - West Chicago Prelims. This will be a limited entry meet.  Roster should be at practice on Monday, Tuesday at latest.  Traditionally one of our best meets of the year.  Bus will go West/South out and West/South back. 5pm start.

Saturday- We have 2 meets! Rosters should be at practice on Monday.
With a 7am call time @ Glenbard South, the F/S meet at Lions Township South.  Swimming starts at 10am and should be done around 12pm.

With an 11am call time @ Glenbard West, the finals of the West Chicago meet.  Meet starts at 1pm, and should be done around 3:30pm.

This is an extremely busy week, so please don't be afraid to ask questions.

First Week Inside

Starting this week practice goes indoors to COD.  This means that we will be done at 4:30 daily.

Athletes not in a carpool will need to rush to the white busses immediately after school.

The biggest piece of news is that we will be rolling out all the fundraising stuff this week.  Right now I need everyone to fill out this form so that I can organize everyone for the fundraiser.  Tickets and a big write up will be handed out at practice.

Finally quick recap of the LT relays.  We did finish in a disappointing 8th place, far removed from our 5th place finish last year.  Obviously have a ton of work to do between now and the end of the season.

Labor Day Week - First Meets of the season!

Hope everyone is having a great Labor Day, and most importantly enjoying the day off.

Big news this week is our first 2 meets.

Thursday we are at Bartlett.  This is an all athlete meet, meaning athletes from both levels will be competing if they are eligible.  Bus will be "immediately" after school.  Should be West then South.  We will go come home in the same order, West then South.  Meet starts at 4:30pm, will be extremely quick.

Saturday is the LT relays.  Only athletes on Varsity will be competing.  Bus will be at South only at 7:15am.  Meet starts at 9:00am, and traditionally we are on the bus by noon.  We will return directly to South.

JV athletes are off on Saturday.

Looking ahead, there is only a single date of note.  On Saturday night September 17th, we have our Senior night at the YMCA.  Just got formally booked last week, so sorry for late notice.

Intersquad Wrap-up

Congrats to all the Girls on a great week of competition during the inter-squad week.  The Green team won the weeks competitions 10-0.  The Blue team then went on to win the swim meet 88-82.  However, the GREEN team was the overall winner of the week with a total score of 92-88.  Special comment on the captains of doing a great job of juggling line ups and everything throughout the week.

News for this coming week....

First we are no longer taking the yellow bus.  Athletes will either be carpooling with an upperclassmen, taking a White Bus, or getting driven by an adult.  The captains are communicating this ASAP.  Athletes that are on the White Bus, it will leave at 2:10pm on Monday, 2:40pm all other days.  If you are late it will not wait for you.  Athletes need to arranged their own transportation after practice. Direct questions to me please.

Our practice times are still 3:45-5:45p all week, this includes PLC Monday and Friday Half Day.

Saturday Practice is Varsity only.

No practice Monday(Labor Day)

Meets start next week.

Official Tryout Week 2016

Welcome to the first official week of the season!

This week all swim sessions will be focused on tryouts and determining what training group each athlete should be on, Varsity or JV.  This does mean practice this week will be a bit boring and very formulaic as we get athletes into their correct groups.  I know I am looking forward to starting to bring some intensity to practice.

We also have something outside the pool going on daily this week.

Monday - Suit Fitting Immediately following swimming at Butterfield.  I know we have a number of people at orientation.  If you can't make it, there are 3 options.  Send money with someone else, and give them your size.  Call Swimmer's Edge and order directly through them.  Go to Swimmer's Edge and try on the suit there.  Costs is $65.85

Tuesday - First Weight Room session of the season.  This will be at West, we will meet in the Fieldhouse.  Enter the lower build, Biester Gym, go down the stairs and all the way to the back of the building.  All athletes are expected to be there, excluding athletes who have orientation

Wednesday - First Weight Room session at South.  Enter Door 19 aka the tunnel.  Go through that hallway, we will meet in the gym lobby.  Upperclassmen will help out.  All athletes should be there.  At 5:45pm we have the swim team parent meeting at West(room TBA).  Immediately following the swim team meeting is the all athletics meeting in the Auditorium.  This meeting does count as the required attendance for South familie

Thursday - Pictures at 12:45 at West in the Gymnasium.  Apparel is swimsuit and jean shorts.  If the swimsuits aren't in we will wear the warm-ups.  Will be handing out the order forms on Tuesday and Wendesday.

Moving forward to this week.  Normal practice schedule for all PM workouts.  AM practices go Tuesday West/Wednesday South/Friday South.  We are starting to split groups this week, so this means on Friday only the Sectional group will have AM practice.

Saturday is the Metea Valley Invite.  This is a limited entry meet and I will have roster at practice on Tuesday.

Finally, tech suits.  If you have not purchased a tech suit please do so ASAP.  These are amazing pieces of technology that have changed the sport of swimming.  I break tech suits down to 4 levels...

Level 1 - Entry level tech suit.  These are "cheap" and ideal for a new swimmer who is just learning about competitive swimming.  Example would be a speedo FS2

Level 2 - Mid Tier Tech Suit.  These are suits that have stitched seams.  They are a step up from the old model suits, and still a good bit behind the newer "bonded" suits.  Costs are still reasonable.  Example would be Speedo LZR Racer Pro.

Level 3 - Bonded Tech Suits.  These are newer suits with heat bonded seams and 0 stitching.  Recommended suit for athletes pursuing the next level.  Examples are Speedo LZR Racer Elite, Arena Carbon Pro, BlueSeventy Nero 14.

Level 4 - Newest Model Suits.  Currently not recommended as the price point is inhibitive.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Pre DGN, Post LT

That was a long night

Tomorrow we are recognizing the Seniors at DGN.  This will be very brief.  Parents of Seniors need to be ready no later than 5:15pm for recognition.

LT Recap.  Obviously they are a very good team(should be top 5 at State).  I felt the kids swam extremely well, try to keep them fed this week as this many meets is extremely tough on the body.

Finals Week

Great job at OPRF on Friday night.  We swam a fairly weak line up to explore some other options and we got a ton of new team best swims.  I will update these when I get the results.

This week is Finals week as such I just wanted to communicate some schedule updates.

A) All PM practices are required.
B) Tuesday AM practice is required for Varsity optional for JV(both schools are welcome to come)
C) Wednesday/Friday AM practice is optional for all.

Saturday practice is Varsity only and will likeley be 1:15pm @ COD.

Friday night we are at York.  Bus will be from South first at 3:00pm.

We will have MLK day off.

Back to School

First and foremost thanks to everyone for doing a great job of juggling the insane Winter Break Schedule.  I want to take a quick moment to thank Coach Vince for juggling his day job with our rather bizarre pool time.

Moving forward to this week.
All weekday swims are now 2:30-4:30pm at COD.
Saturday practice will likely be 6:00am-8:00am (Varsity Only)
Dryland schedule as follows(Varsity all - JV home school only)
     Tuesday - West
     Wednesday - South
     Friday - West

Friday night meet at OPRF High School.  As always longest bus ride of the year.  Most important bit of information for this is we are now far enough into the season that attendance requirements are going to be enforced.  Athletes who don't have the minimum attendance requirements will not be competing, however they are still required to be at the meet and will still be warming up with the team.
