1st Week Recap and Slow Week

Before moving onto this week, quick recap of last week.

First, the Bartlett Meet, which was on Thursday night.  Do want to point out that the athletes did a great job of embracing some of the challenges that were outside their control.  Varsity did lose 78-93, in a pretty good meet.  JV absolutely dominated.  We felt the girls swam well for so early in the season and starting the very first week of training in earnest.

Onwards to this week.  First week inside at COD, which won't change much, just needs kids to hustle over to the pool.  We will be done at 4:45pm daily now.

Saturday is one of the few early AM practices, but only for Varsity.

Thursday night we are LT South HS for a dual meet.  They will start the meet with diving, so swimming should start around 5:30pm.  Bus will go from West to South on the way to the meet, then opposite on the way back.

Start of Swim Meets 2017

First, no practice Labor Day.

Moving onto the rest of the week.

Standard morning practice schedule, Tuesday at West, Thursday at South.

This is our final week of afternoon practices outside at Butterfield.  Practice will remain at 3:30-5:30pm.  Starting next week we are at COD until 4:45p.

Friday practice is Varsity only.  Coaches have clinic this weekend.  Varsity practice on Friday is still TBA.

The order for Silicon Caps closes Monday night, so if you are interested in ordering Silicone Caps click HERE.

Moving onto the biggest and most important information of the week, Meets!

Thursday is our first meet of the year at Bartlett HS. Meet is scheduled to start at 5pm.  All athletes will be swimming in this meet.  Bus will be immediately after school, South first.

Saturday is our first Invite of the meet with the LT relays.  Meet is scheduled to start at 9am.  I will have final roster communicated to athletes on Tuesday.  Bus is from South at 7:15am.

Few meet reminders.  Athletes must wear team suit and cap(excluding latex allergies).  Athletes are to have proper apparel on during the meet, we are getting team apparel Thursday.  No cell phones during the meet.  Athletes must ride bus both ways.

Dead Week

Before moving onto this week, quick recap of last week, which was the always exciting Intersquad week.

Throughout the week the girl's competed in a number of short quick challenges with the Green team building up a 10-0 lead before the start of the meet on Saturday.  More impressively was the Green team winning all 4 different challenges throughout the week.  As we go to the swim meet on Saturday, the Blue team took over.  Dominating the meet and at no time ever being behind in the swim meet.  Final score after the swim meet and the entire week, 90-90.  For the first time ever, a true tie for the entire week.  Green team won on the strength of their entire week.

On Friday we sat the athletes down and discussed the team goals for the entire season.  While I'm not going to publish our goals here, I highly recommend families taking 10-15 minutes to discuss those goals with your athletes.  I will say this WE > me was a recurring theme.

Moving onto this week.  This is our only non meet week of the entire year, and as such the most "boring" week of the year.

All AM practices are required for Varsity and optional for JV.  As always for JV consistency is king!  If you plan on going to AM workouts at the off school, please have transportation arranged prior to going to practice.

Saturday practice will transition to Varsity only.  Moving forward JV will have no Saturday practices.  They do have a few Saturday meets, but non-meet weeks they are off practice.

Monday we would like all athletes to be at Butterfield no later than 3:10pm.  We are going to introduce weekly goals for JV and continue with weekly goals with Varsity.  This is considered part of practice.

Our hope is to swim from 3:30-5:30p.  We will never be done later than 5:45p.

Intersquad Week 2017

Congrats to everyone on making it through the very busy first full week of practice and school.  First time we have ever had both of those on the same week and I am very pleased with how everyone did.

This coming week we do have a few points to cover.

First, picture day is on Monday at West immediately following practice.  This will result in a different than normal bus route on the way home.  If South athletes would like to be picked up after pictures that is fine, though they will need a transport waiver(I will have them with me at pictures).  Girls are to wear jean shorts(or full jeans) and the warm-up jackets they got on Saturday.

Varsity Dryland is on Tuesday morning at West and on Thursday morning at South.  These are optional for JV, however if JV is going to come to drylands I am going to ask that they come consistently and come to dryland with a purpose.  If anyone from JV is planning on going to the opposite school for morning dryland please figure out transportation back to your school ahead of time
Finally, Friday will be our first day without the yellow bus.  We are going to use this as a test to make sure our carpools are correct.  There will also be White busses available to get athletes to practice.  As a reminder we are unable to return athletes to school after practice is over.

Moving onto the most important part of the week, intersquad week!  Throughout the course of the week the athletes have been broken into 2 teams(Blue and Green) and will be competing in numerous tiny challenges to score points for their team.  On Saturday we will culminate the week with an intersquad meet at practice.  Scores will be updated throughout the week.

This will be an extremely busy week, that we have been forced to make some changes to to get everything in realistically.

Monday-
3pm @ Butterfield Park District is a Suit Fitting for the competition suits.  These are the same suits as last year, so athlete who competed last year do not have to purchase new suits if their old suits are still usable.  Cost is $66, make checks out to Swimmer's Edge

Practice/Tryouts from 3:45-5:45pm @ Butterfield Park District - This is the first required practice.

6pm @ Buttefield Park District is the swim team parent informational meeting in the gym.  This is a required meeting for at least 1 parent of each athlete, and all athletes should also be there.  This meeting will take 20-25 minutes or less.

Tuesday-
All athletes will be attending weights/conditioning in the afternoon at West - We will be training from 1pm-2pm.  This is the only time we will be requiring weights/conditioning for non Varsity athletes

Practice/Tryouts from 3:45-5:45pm @ Butterfield Park District(we will do our best to be done about 10 minutes early)

The athletic departments have their parent meetings following practice.  All parents need to attend at least one of the athletic department meetings.  It does not necessarily have to be at your respective school.

South 6pm-7pm
West 6:30pm-7:30pm

Wednesday-
First day of school

All athletes will need to take the bus to and from practice.  Bus should leave West, athletes meet in front of Biester, at 3:00pm.  Bus will then go to South, athletes meet in athletic lobby.   Then to Butterfield.  Following practice will be in reverse order.

HS Girl's 2017!

I am pleased to announce that I will be returning as the Head Coach for my 8th year of the Glenbard West/South Co-op Swim Team, for both Women's and Men's.  Coach Tim Jenkins will be returning to be the JV Coach of the Women's Team.  We are looking at possible coaches for the JV Men's Team, including Coach Vince.

First, Girl's information....

Optional Practice August 9th-11th @ Butterfield Park District 8:00am-10:00am
Require Tryouts August 14th-18th @ Butterfield Park District 3:45pm-5:45pm
Required Time Trials August 19th @ TBA(7:30am-9:30am start, 2 hours)
More information on tryout expectations is available on the tryout tab of the blog.

Once school starts a bus will be provided to get athletes to and from practice the week of tryouts.  There will be 2 required weightroom/conditioning sessions one each on Monday the 14th and Tuesday the 15th.  Time and location is TBA, dependent upon other sports schedules.  Any athlete competing in the USA Swimming Summer Junior Nationals is excused from tryouts, they should still be at all Weightroom/conditioning sessions.

There is a Remind set-up that will be managed by the Senior Captains.  This will be the primary method of getting information out to athletes, and parents, throughout the week.  To access click HERE.  We recommend you put all athlete and parent numbers on the Remind so all people are aware of what is going on.

There will be a suit fitting on Tuesday August 15th prior to practice.  Team Suits are a required purchase.  More information will be available at practice on Monday August 14th.  Suits are the same as last year for returning athletes.

There is a required parent meeting for all parents, and all athletes, following practice on Tuesday August 15th.  Location is TBA.

As a reminder all athletes must complete a Code of Conduct Form, Physical, as well as register for the sport through PowerSchools.  For more information on any of these please contact your respective Athletic Department.  All information must be completed prior to the first practice, athletes who do not have everything completed are not allowed to participate.

I am looking for a number of parents to assist in some of the dryside management of the program.  In the past we have had singular parents doing multiple jobs.  I would like to transition this to numerous people doing smaller, less time intensive task.  Such as assisting with fundraising, apparel, meet food organizer, etc.  If you are interested in doing anything please contact me as soon as possible.

All afternoon swim practices are required for all athletes, regardless of level.  It is the responsibility of the athlete to inform the coaches prior to the start of any practice if they are unable to make it.  Morning Weightroom/Conditioning sessions are required for all Varsity athletes, they are optional for all JV athletes.  All dual meets(during the school week, normally on Thursday) are required for all athletes.  Limited Entry invitational meets will have rosters published at practice and via Remind on Tuesday's, any athlete who is unable to participate is expected to communicate issues prior to practice on Wednesday.

Athletes who miss more than 2 practices will be sat out for a meet, each additional missed practice is an additional missed meet.  Athletes who are late, or must leave early it is considered a 1/3 missed practice.  We will be following the school districts policy on excused absences.

Practice schedule is posted the the Calendar Tab at the top of the blog.  Generally speaking we are at Butterfield Park District from 3:45-5:45pm until the Monday after Labor Day.  At that time we will move to practicing at COD from 2:45-4:45pm.  All weekend practices are TBA.  No practice on Labor Day or Columbus Day.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me.

Boy's Tryout Information is posted to the Tryout Tab.

Moving forward to the next couple of nights.  Dual meet on Friday at LT(South Campus).  We will be doing a very brief Senior Recognition.  Need all Senior Parents there by 5:15pm.  Once we are done we will go take pictures while LT does their Senior Night.  Meet starts at 5:00pm, they traditionally do Diving First. Bus will be West at 3:00 then South, opposite order home.

Saturday is our last Invite of the season at Metea Valley.  Bus will be 8:00am from South, meet starts at 10am.  Traditionally the fastest, and deepest, Invite we are at all year.

Finally, Tech Suits.  Feel free to read back through the blog, as I have written about them in excruciating detail in the past.  The reality is they work, and while not required are recommended.  Athletes have spent nearly 200 hours in the water this year, and they deserve to perform as well as possible.  All suits should be tried on at Swimmer's Edge, as they know what I am looking for based on levels.

1) Brand new swim suit.  Basically a brand new swim suit  that fits very snugly and ideally.  This is recommended for newer swimmers.

2) Entry Level.  These are much older suits and traditionally much cheaper than newer suits.  They tend to not work very long, but are good for a single meet.  Recommended for JV athletes who have less than either 2 years of HS experience or a full year of club experience.

3) Mid-Tier.  Basically the modern suits from a generation ago.  Basically the suits worn in 2008/2012.  These tend to be bonded suits and can be relatively expensive.  They tend to last decent amount of swims.  Recommended for Sectional level athletes.

4) Near Top Tier.  Modern suits, excluding the very top tier.  These aren't exorbitantly expensive, but aren't cheap.  These are bonded suits, and can be very fragile.  Recommended for Sectional level+.

There is another tier, I don't recommend.  Ultimately, the fit is the most important part.  As such prior to purchase they need to be tried on.  Go to Swimmer's Edge, they know the suits, and they know what to recommend for you.  Please let them know what team you are from.
